Term 3

Week 8: Firefighters visit
As part of our Firewise programme we had two firefighters from the East Coast Bays Station visit us at Torbay School. They talked to us about the gear that they wear.
We really liked the breathing gear. It helps the firefighters to breathe in smoke. It sounds like Darth Vada

We also got to learn about the fire truck and some of the gear they carry.
We loved being able to go inside the truck.

Week 5; Corbans Estate Arts Centre: Visiting Artists

Rangitoto Team were lucky enough to be visiting by the Mamas and the Aunties from Corbans Estate Arts Centre. We learned that there are 30,000 island in the pacific islands.
We started our morning with a waiata.

The Aunties talked to us about the importance of greetings in Pasifika culture. We said Aloha to a Hawaiian Mama, Bula to a Fijian Mama, Ia ora na to a Tahitian Mama, Talofa Lava to Auntie Jacinda from Samoa and Maloelelei to the Tongan Auntie. Finally we said Kia orana to the Rarotongan Mama.

Our first workshop was Pasifika Drumming. Drums were tools used to keep villages safe and send warnings about coming storms, so people could prepare their houses and food
Drums were also used in times of wars so the warriors could prepare. Now the drums are used for fun.
We learnt a simple rhythm from the aunties and got to have a go ourselves.

Our second workshop was on  lei making. We all got to make our own lei.

Our final workshop today was Pasifika dance. The girls learnt their graceful moves while the boys learnt to be strong warriors.

Week 5: Fire Wise
This week we are starting our mini Inquiry topic of Firewise. We are learning about the uses and dangers of fire as well as how to keep safe in the event of a fire. In week 7 we will have a visit from some Firefighters.

Room 23 learners will be bringing home a booklet with activities to complete with your family. I will update the blog about which activity to complete and when.

This week, please Activity 1, (details on the inside cover). It would be great if this could be done before our next session, on Friday.

Week 4: Corbans Estate Art Centre visits Torbay School
In week 7 we are excited to be having a visit from some resident artists from Corbans Arts Estate. While we are not heading off site for this trip, we will still need some parent helpers on the day. A notice is going home shortly.

Week 3: Coming to soon to Room 23 - Seesaw
Room 23 is going to be trialing an app called Seesaw. This app allows learners to share their learning with photos, videos and recorded voice that they create themselves. We are just starting to learn how to use it. Watch this space for more information.

Week 2: Learning Conversations
A huge thank you to all the parents who came to our Learning Conversations. The children loved sharing their learning with you.

Next week is our turn to host the school Assembly on Thursday at 2.00pm. We hope you can join us.

Have you checked our Oral Language topics for this term? The updated table is on our Home Learning Page. You can find it here.

Week 1: Passports with our Buddy Class

Today we had help from our buddy class, Room 5, to make our own passports. We will use these to travel around Rangitoto Team as we learn about Arts from different cultures and countries.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to Term 3! A special welcome to Libbi who has joined Room 23 from Canada.
This term we are inquiring into how The Arts are different around the world. We look forward to sharing some of our learning with you at our School Assembly in week 3.
Learners are welcome to bring slippers to school to wear inside the classroom. This helps to keep our carpets a little cleaner. Please ensure they are named.
